When winter weather starts to bite and Christmas trees begin appearing for sale, rough sleepers and people begging on street corners seem to become more visible, perhaps because conscience has that effect at this time of year. Whatever, the sadly routine experience of being asked for spare change 0n the capital’s streets has prompted to me to take my copy of George Orwell’s Down And Out In Paris and London, first published in 1933, down from my bookshelf.
